May Phang (pronounced pong) has performed on three continents, including solo recitals and chamber music concerts in venues such as the Goethe Institute and Victoria Concert Hall (Singapore), Chapelle historique du Bon Pasteur and Place-des-Arts (Montreal), the Concertgebouw (Netherlands), and the Kennedy Center for the Arts, the National Gallery, and the Chicago Cultural Center in the United States. Called “one talented pianist” by the web community Ureshi Now, her playing is described as “fluid and masterful” by Young Audiences of Indiana, and “magnificent” with ”…a mix of sensitivity and bravura” by Classical New Jersey. A finalist in the 2007 Iowa Piano Competition and prizewinner of the Chopin Young Pianists’ Competition (Buffalo, NY), Canadian Music Competition, and Pontoise International Young Artists Competition (France), Ms. Phang has performed with orchestras such as the Singapore Symphony, the Banff Chamber Players, the Montreal Symphony, and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and has appeared at the Singapore Festival of Arts, the Montreal International Piano Festival, and the Karol Szymanowski Festival in Zakopane, Poland. Her radio and television appearances include ”Life and Times” and “Arts Around” (Singapore Broadcasting Corporation), Radio-Canada, WFLN (Philadelphia), Vermont Public Radio, and WFMT (Chicago). 2006-2007 season highlights include solo recitals in Wisconsin, Indiana, and Iowa, soloist with the Indianapolis Philharmonic, small ensemble recitals in Florida, Cincinnati, and Milwaukee, and a live broadcast on Wisconsin Public Radio. Dr. Phang began her piano studies in her native Singapore and earned her Associate and Licentiate diplomas from the Trinity College of Music (London) by the age of twelve. She is a graduate of McGill University in Canada and received her doctorate from Temple University in Philadelphia. Dr. Phang is an active music educator and is currently assistant professor of music at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. She is also a teaching artist of Young Audiences of Indiana, the state’s oldest and largest provider of professional arts education programs for children, has adjudicated competitions for the Waukesha Symphony and PianoArts of Wisconsin, conducted master classes at such renowned institutions as Idyllwild Arts Academy and Interlochen Center for the Arts, and has given presentations for music teachers’ associations.
