Tumbao Bravo was formed in August, 2003 by conga player Alberto Nacif, and sax/flutist Paul VornHagen to perform original jazz compositions with authentic Cuban rhythms. Since that time, the band has released four critically-acclaimed CDs that have won three Detroit Music Awards (most recent, 2013), and have been aired on all major NPR jazz and Latin jazz programs nationwide. Tumbao Bravo has performed at such jazz festivals as Detroit, Ann Arbor, Birmingham, Lansing, and Michigan, as well as the Great Lakes Folk Festival, civic concerts, libraries, and at jazz clubs in Michigan and Illinois. The sextet has received kudos in LATIN BEAT magazine, Detroit Free Press, Ann Arbor News, Descarga, Latin Corner, and other Michigan newspapers.
Members are Paul VornHagen (sax/flute/piccolo/Latin percussion), Alberto Nacif (congas), Cuban bongo/bell player Pepe Espinosa Javier Barrios (timbales), Pat Prouty (bass), Brian DiBlassio or Wesley Reyoso (piano/keyboard), and Paul Finkbeiner or Bob Mojica (trumpet).
